Summer Time

Hey readers of Machine Mindz. Summer is so close I can practically feel it… Just the other day it was 90 smoldering degrees outside. So before the summer starts I wanted to take a poll of what everyone loves to do during the summer. There will be a surprise for the highest voted topic by this time next week. Until then…

Summertime and the livin’s easy

World Environment Day: Are you in?

Today I wanted to tell everyone that World Environment Day is quickly approaching. On Jun 5 people from all over the world will be participating in World Environment Day. As the United Nations puts it:

World Environment Day is also a day for people from all walks of life
to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter
outlook for themselves and future generations

The whole world’s doing it and so should you. So what are you going to be doing on World Environment Day?

Get Ready for Rio+20

I am excited to join the discussion on sustainable, green, and clean energy at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (or simply Rio+20) starting this June 20.

For those of you who want to know what Rio+20 is, I’ll be giving you all a brief summary

Thousands of participants from governments, the private sector, NGOs and other stakeholders will be gathering at Rio de Janeiro to push for sustainable development across the world. They are addressing two themes at the conference

(a) a green economy in the context of sustainable development poverty eradication
and (b) the institutional framework for sustainable development

In other words, world members are getting together to make the world go green through sustainable development which, if all goes according to plan, will eradicate poverty and help developing nations dig out of that grave called poverty.

Today I will be starting the 21 day countdown until we talk sustainable at Rio+20. I encourage all readers to take a moment and think about all the issues that the world needs to discuss in order to start this Green Clean Revolution

Here are critical issues that will be tackled at Rio+20

Julian Assange: Hero or Villain

Julian Assange. Everyone around the world knows him. Either they hate him or they love him. But you know who hates him the most?

The huge power players in international politics.

They are upset that their gossip and political backstabbing has been unveiled by the notorious Wikileaks.

Wikileaks waged its war on secrecy Nov. 28 two years ago.   The Battle is between freedom of speech and its double standard. There is a double standard that allows people of the world to protest against a government’s visible issues but as soon as a group of people shine light on that government’s deepest and darkest secrets, “all hell breaks loose”. Evidently the people of the world were “not supposed to know that.”

Wikileaks purpose is to:

Bring important news and information to the public… One of our most important activities is to publish original source material alongside our news stories so readers and historians alike can see evidence of the truth

In a perfect world there should be no harm in letting the public see the truth. But the truth hurts and in Julian Assange’s case, it hurts bad.

I woke up at around 4:00 AM ET to hear the verdict on Mr. Assange’s appeal. Protesters gathered outside of the court calling for Assange’s release. The big question for the day was whether or not Britain should extradite Assange to Sweden to face the sex crimes he was charged with from abroad.

Assange could have committed the crime or the charges could be trumped up as a way to get rid of him, but all of that was irrelevant during the verdict. The only thing that mattered was the court’s decision.

At 4:42 AM ET London, seven judges at Britain’s highest court dismissed his appeal by a 5-2 majority. Due to a legal loophole Assange was able to buy himself some time from the extradition’s calling. Luckily for Assange and his team of attorneys, they have two weeks to appeal the decision.

Wikileaks has released both controversial and beneficial information to the public. Some of its biggest leaks include:

1. The 250,000 diplomatic cables that affirmed the two-faced masks diplomats wear

2. A list of websites censored by country across the world

3. The Iraq War Logs

Julian Assange has become one of the world’s most dangerous and most influential men. In a TED video he explains how  exposing the Kenyan government’s long corruption through his leaks helped change the outcome of the next election for the better. That sounds like something a hero would do. Though in contrast, the US Army has accused Wikileaks of being criminal and placing troops abroad at risk. Wikileaks also helped fuel the recent Arab Spring that led to the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi.

A man who has undoubtedly changed the world is now facing charges of rape from what seems to be out of the blue. Is the world trying to shoot the messenger? Is the truth better left unheard?I ask again: Julian Assange…is he a villain or hero?

Well, there’s a question as to what sort of information is important in the world, what sort of information can achieve reform.
And there’s a lot of information.
So much information that organizations are spending economic effort into concealing.
That’s a really good signal that when the information gets out, there’s a hope of it doing some good.

A Green Memorial Day

For us Americans, today is Memorial Day, a day we all take to celebrate those who put their lives on the line so our country can stand strong. Before all the BBQ’s start today, I would like to ask two things. First I would like to ask for a moment of silence for those who died for this land of the free and home of the brave…

Second I want to implore everyone to try something new: To celebrate a Green Memorial Day. Now most readers will probably look at that phrase, “Green Memorial Day” with an estranged gaze. The truth is that most everyone already celebrates a Green Memorial Day unconsciously. I am here to tell you to you how you can give it a conscious effort.

If you don’t already, why not give hiking a chance. Take a walk through the wilderness, through a mountain pass, or at your local hiking trail. Any kind of exercise that will get you on your feet and moving is green and anything but harmful, right?

Running is a big question mark that’s there each and every day. It asks you, ‘Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today?

-Peter Maher

If mountains aren’t your forté, put on some running kicks and hit the road (or trail). Running is great exercise. Enjoy the breeze and the beautiful weather outside if you can. Running keeps you in shape and it doesn’t harm the environment (unless you’re wearing new futuristic shoes that emit some sort of carbon gas into the atmosphere).

Or maybe Running or Hiking isn’t really in your schedule. Put on a helmet and break out the bikes. For example did you know Americans use their bicycles for less than one percent of all urban trips while Europeans bike in cities a lot more often? There are 100 million bicycles manufactured world.  Bicycles are green too. They aren’t running out of stock anytime soon.

Go Shopping

United by Blue Fashion

Or go shopping for green outfits. Fortunately there are styles that vary from just green colored clothing. Go and discover different clothing lines that are eco-friendly like United by Blue or well known outfits from Levi Strauss

There are several ways you can celebrate your Memorial Day weekend. I know I’m going to celebrate it Green. How about you?

World Environment Day Tomorrow

Green Economy: Does it Include you?

That’s this year’s theme for tomorrow’s World Environment Day (WED). Do you believe it includes you? Maybe if you’re 90 years young, the idea of Green might strike you as hippie talk. For the rest of us, thinking about a green economy is thinking about our future. Bouncing back from a global financial crisis is the future for the world’s economy. Why not make it Green?

It would be great to join in on the Green discussion across the world. A Green economy includes all of us. We should show that talking sustainable and talking green is not just hippie talk.  We can raise awareness or join in on environmental cleanups. It doesn’t matter how you do it.. Just go out and be Green on WED!
